Day at Uncle Ken's and Auntie Lynn's House
April 3, 2015
So last week marked 40 days since the passing of my Uncle Ken. No one in the pictures is blood related, but we still consider each other family. The four women at the bottom are the reason for this; they were best friends 40+ years ago in the Philippines and they are still the best of friends. This in turn created the bond with my "cousins" and I. Every Thanksgiving our families would meet at Uncle Ken's and Auntie Lynn's house. As a child, it was a time of exploring and playing hide and seek in what seemed to be Uncle Ken's never ending backyard, playing darts, and being scared to death while watching the 1989 classic horror movie, Pumpkin Head, on his gigantic TV.
Last week was a bittersweet reunion. We were sad because of the circumstances that brought us there, but we were happy because of being able to relive the nostalgia that was in that house. We're now too big and probably too slow to play a competitive game of hide and seek. Uncle Ken got rid of his gigantic TV and the Pumpkin Head VHS was no where to be found. So our only option in reliving the past was playing darts. The original dartboard was gone, but the holes from our errant throws were still in the door. So we jumped into Arvin's truck, went to the local Target, and bought a dartboard, just like the original; one side with the traditional dartboard and the other was the baseball dartboard. We came back and had a good old time.
Thank you Uncle Ken for always hosting Thanksgiving and ensuring that your friends and your friends' children all became family. I know that you are enjoying heaven and playing chess with my dad once again.
