Tornado Ruth
March 5, 2017
"In the multitude of my doubts within me thy comforts delight my soul."
-Psalm 94:19
My first glimpse of Ruth was of her taking a washcloth and wiping the dirt off a fellow homeless person's back. In hindsight, maybe I should have taken a photo of the act, but at the time, I think I just wanted to experience the intimate moment. She introduced herself as "Tornado". She wasn't explicit about how she got the nickname, but after talking to her for a few minutes I could guess that it has something to do with her deep desire to change the system to get more help for the homeless and mentally ill.
Her mom was a civil rights activist in the 1960s nicknamed "Battleship" and what her mom did for black people, she wants to do for the homeless and mentally ill.
At the end of our conversation, I told her that she has a big heart and to continue to help those around her. She replied with, "It's my civic responsibility" and then she reached into her backpack and gave me a photo copy of Psalm 94.
"But the Lord hath been my fortress; and my God the rock of my refuge"
-Psalm 94:22
