"What do you need prayer for?"
"For me to love myself.
When my wife kicked me out, she said go get some help. So my help, I just come back to the street and started living here. That's help? It was total guilt."
There was a lot of pain and regret in our conversation. Mike is in his 60s. He used to live in a nice neighborhood, has a wife, a son, and a granddaughter. As he was remembering his granddaughter, his eyes began to water. He desperately wants his family back. He has gone to rehab for his addictions, but has had relapses.
"I try hard to get well, but I can't do enough."
He acknowledges his need for help, but his relapses prevent him for admittance to any new rehab program. He has slept at the doorsteps of rehab centers hoping that they would admit him one more time.
He brought up Matthew 18:2-4:
He called a child and had him stand among them. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child—this one is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
It sounds like an odd verse to reference from a man in his 60s, but like a child who relies on his parents to provide for their needs, Mike realizes that only his heavenly father can provide for his need of getting better. Please pray for Mike. He has allowed me to share this in hope that people would pray for him to conquer his addictions, to be accepted to a rehab facility, to be able to be with his family again, and to ultimately love himself again.
Thanks,
Mark
