Elvis

"Look at me in the eyes. Do you pray for Jesus to come soon?"
I met Elvis on 19th Street in Costa Mesa, CA. He was with his wife, Rosanna, and two other members of the homeless community, Chris and Robert.
He shared a story of when he was in prison and he was on the verge of hanging himself. "Then a voice came to my head and said, 'What about God's glory? Who's going to reflect it?'"
I asked him what he hopes people would think of when they see his photo:
"Of happiness instead of bitterness and judgement. What kind of fruits would you bear that others would run to instead of running away from? Would you like to bear fruits of comfort for people who are going through hard times? Would you rather produce fruits of bitterness and hatred? Or judgement? You know what I mean? People will go to a tree that bears fruit that they love. Fruits of love. The fruits of life are to love thy neighbor as themself. To see how they are doing. How their families are doing. To help anyway way they can. To pray for them. Joy. Do people run anyway from you or to you? When you are in a room, do people avoid you? You want people to want to come to you. That way you can share your fruits with them. Not fruits of religion. Not fruits of judgement, but fruits of kindness. Fruits of mercy. Those are fruits of life."
I asked him what he thought of his photo when I showed him the screen on the back of my camera, "It looks like eternity."
Please pray for Elvis' wife, Rosanna, who is very sick and sat on the curb shivering throughout the time I spoke to Elvis. Also, please pray for both of them so that they both find permanent housing.
