"I still thank God everyday for giving me my daily bread. I've been stabbed twice and shot in the leg. There was a mentally ill man who wanted to take all of my money out of my bank account. He broke into my house and tried to take a knife to rip my face off. He wanted to wear my face as a mask so that when he went into the bank he could take my money. I fought him off, but he shot me in the leg before he left."
Carmen has been living in the streets of Los Angeles since 1988. She has 10 children and fostered up to 15 others. She was a field worker and later became a school teacher in Northern California
"You have to teach the kids that there's hope when they have God."
She had to leave everyone and everything behind because of her abusive husband.
